The SUNY Potsdam women’s hockey team (1-1-1, 1-1-1 ECAC West) skated to a 1-1 tie with William Smith College (0-4-1, 0-2-1 ECAC West) in the first ever meeting between the programs. Sophomore forward Jordan Ott (Hilton, N.Y./Rochester Edge) scored for the Bears.
A minute into the first period the Herons were called for hooking and Potsdam made the most of the ensuing power play. Freshman defenseman Lynette Kryminksi (Cross Lake, Manitoba/Norman Wild) fed Ott for the 1-0 lead at 1:49. The teams combined for 18 shots in the first 20 minutes and the Bears held the one-goal advantage at the intermission.
Play in the second period was evenly matched and the Bears killed off two of the Herons’ power-play opportunities. William Smith tied the score at the 13:28 mark when freshman defenseman Emily Burton (Reisterstown, Md./Friends School of Baltimore) set up freshman forward Sarah Garrett (Derry, N.H./Holderness School) for her first collegiate goal. The period ended with the score still knotted at one apiece.
Both teams came out of the locker rooms energized in the third period, but William Smith freshman goaltender Megan Messuri (Stoneham, Mass./Northwood School) and Bears junior goalieAlexane Rodrigue (Monkland, Ontario/Bemidji State) stopped everything in their path. Each team had offensive chances, but the score remained 1-1 at the end of regulation.
In overtime, the Bears outshot the Herons 5-3, while Messuri and Rodrigue hung on for the draw.
Rodrigue stopped 30 shots on the afternoon, while Messuri finished with 41 saves. Potsdam went 1-4 on the power play and the Herons were 0-4.
