BUFFALO, N.Y.-The SUNY Potsdam women’s hockey team (10-7-3, 6-4-3 ECAC West) shook off an early 1-0 deficit to down Buffalo State (2-18, 2-11) 3-2 on Saturday night. Freshman forward Amanda Peterson (West Chazy, N.Y./Chazy Flyers), senior captain Izzy Fayerman (Calgary, Alberta/The Edge) and senior forward Jessica Silveira (Brampton, Ontario/Brampton Thunder) each scored for the Bears. The win keeps Potsdam tied with Oswego State for third place in the ECAC West as they close in on a playoff berth. The victory was sophomore goalieAlexane Rodrigue‘s eighth of the season, tying the Bears’ single-season mark set by Jen Conophy ’13 in 2012.
Kara Goodwin gave the Bengals their lone lead of the contest at the 9:34 mark of the first period on a helper from Alison Mish. The advantage lasted just 32 seconds before Peterson struck to tie the score. Silveira and sophomore defenseman Katie Marsman (Wantagh, N.Y./Wyoming Seminary) assisted on the goal. With just 40 seconds remaining in the opening period, Fayerman put Potsdam on top for good with assists from freshman forward Jordan Ott (Hilton, N.Y./Rochester Edge) and senior assistant captain Jenn Crawford (Burlington, Ontario/Stony Creek Sabres). The Bears owned a 9-4 advantage on shots through the first 20 minutes.
The second period was more closely contested, but it was Silveira capitalizing on Potsdam’s second power play of the game at the 5:01 mark. The senior finished a feed from Ott and senior captain Brittany Lucky (Kanata, Ontario/Ottawa Senators). Nikki Kirchenberger cut the gap to 3-2 with 1:02 left in the period and the Bengals were down just one by the second intermission.
The Bears killed off three Buffalo State power plays in the final period, holding the Bengals to just five total shots. However, they were unable to gain any insurance. Rodrigue slammed the door in the third period to earn the win.
Buffalo State goalie Jordan Lee finished with 23 saves, while Rodrigue turned aside 16 attempts. The Bengals were 0-5 on the man advantage and the Bears went 1-5. Silveira has now scored eight goals in her last 10 games.
