Condon, Thacker and Wilson score to give Bears 3-1 win at Becker

WORCESTER, MASS.—The SUNY Potsdam women’s hockey team (7-4-1) rallied for three goals in the third period to defeat Becker College (2-9-2) 3-1 on Sunday afternoon. Sophomore forward Lucy Condon (Kitchener, Ontario/Waterloo Ravens), sophomore defenseman Shelbi Thacker (Chesterfield, Mich./Honeybaked) and senior captain Brenna Wilson (Kanata, Ontario/Ottawa Senators) each scored for the Bears and sophomore goalie Kayla McCabe (Watertown, N.Y./Syracuse Nationals) made 22 saves to win her first career start.
The Bears completely controlled the play in the first period, outshooting the Hawks 15-5. Becker goaltender Madison Rigsby kept her team in the game by stopping each Potsdam chance and keeping the game scoreless after 20 minutes.
Each team earned two power plays in the second period and upped its shot totals as a result. The Bears fired 18 more shots at Rigsby without success and the Hawks sent 11 toward McCabe. On its second man advantage, Becker finally solved McCabe with a goal from Claudia Gee. Despite a 33-16 edge in shots, the Bears trailed 1-0 entering the second intermission.
Potsdam began the second period on the power play and fired seven shots on Rigsby in the opening two minutes, but still had no luck. After the Hawks killed off the penalty at the 1:54 mark, they took another 55 seconds later. This time the Bears would not be denied. Just 10 seconds into the power play, sophomore forward Lucy Condon (Kitchener, Ontario/Waterloo Ravens) buried a pass from sophomore defenseman Delphine Léonard (Montreal, Quebec/Dawson College Prep). Potsdam continued to press after the goal and finally gained the lead at the 16:45 mark with another power-play marker. Thacker her first career goal scored with assists from senior captains Anna-Rose Bertin (Marathon, Ontario/Canadian International Hockey Academy) and Wilson. With just 1:18 remaining, Wilson put the game away with an even-strength tally after taking the puck away from a Hawks defender.
Rigsby finished with 47 saves. Potsdam outshot Becker 50-23 and went 2-for-6 on the power play. The Hawks were 1-for-2 on the man advantage.
The game played out similarly to the teams’ first meeting on Dec. 13, 2015, when the Bears badly outshot the Hawks and had to rally from a 2-0 third period hole for a 3-2 win.
The Bear are now off until Tuesday, Jan. 9, when they host Hamilton College at 3 p.m.
