Queanbeyan artists head to Gulgong

Repeated Elements will open at Cudgegong Gallery this Friday and will feature works from local Queanbeyan ceramic artists, Christopher Harman and Debra Boyd-Goggin.

This show presents two individual ceramic artists who both like to repeat certain elements in their artwork, including forms structure, surface treatment and display.

Harman’s work, which has been shown in Munich, Chicago, London and Hong Kong stems from a fascination with plant formations, in particular the architecture of cacti, succulents and fungi.

Bold and bright colours sourced from plants, such as reds, bright greens and yellows feature strongly, he said.

“These create a striking or surreal sensibility. In contrast, I also use sand blasted white porcelain with no colour, to reinforce the eye to focus on the simplicity and silhouette of a form.

“My work imitates plant growth as the components multiply mathematically, repetitively and geometrically and evolve from a base blooming upwards.”

Meanwhile, Debra’s work develops from visual and spiritual experiences relating to her place of birth and growth in PNG & Central Australia. Today she spends much of her time working at her Queanbeyan studio.
