Once again, Atlantic Hockey student-athletes have shown their ability in the classroom matches their ability on the ice. A record number 228 student-athletes have been named to the 2017-18 Atlantic Hockey All-Academic Team. Additionally, nine players posted 4.0 GPAs in 2017-18 leading to them being named Atlantic Hockey Student-Athletes of the Year. Making up the nine recipients were one senior, three juniors, three sophomores, and two freshmen.
Bryant Christian (AIC), Martin Mellberg (AIC), and Adam Brubacher (RIT) repeat as Student-Athletes of the Year. Christian has now been awarded the league’s top academic honor for all four seasons of his career. Mellberg and Brubacher, both sophomores, are taking home their second Student-Athlete of the Year honors.
The other players with 4.0 GPAs for the year are Joshua Lammon and Chris Makowski of Mercyhurst, David Baskerville of Canisius, Zach Tsekos of Sacred Heart, Ryley Risling of Robert Morris, and Sean King of Niagara.
Six of the 11 member institutions placed at least 20 student-athletes on the 2017-18 All-Academic Team, with Niagara pacing the way with 25 representatives. AIC, Canisius, and Robert Morris each had 23 names on the list, while Bentley and Holy Cross had 21 All-Academic Team members.
To qualify for the Atlantic Hockey All-Academic Team, an individual must post a 3.0 GPA or better in all academic semesters for which his team was actively competing.
