Richards, Quinn Named Assistant Coaches Of US Men’s National Team

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – Todd Richards (Crystal, Minn.) and David Quinn (Cranston, R.I.) have been named assistant coaches of the U.S. Men’s National Team that will participate in the 2016 International Ice Hockey Federation Men’s World Championship from May 6-22 in Moscow and St. Petersburg, Russia, it was announced today by USA Hockey. Richards and Quinn will join head coach John Hynes (Warwick, R.I.) behind the bench.

Richards will be representing the United States behind the bench in international competition for the fourth time. The head coach of last year’s bronze medal-winning U.S. Men’s National Team, Richards previously served as an assistant coach for the 2014 U.S. Olympic Men’s Ice Hockey Team and 2010 U.S. Men’s National Team at the IIHF Men’s World Championship. Most recently, Richards spent four full seasons (2011-15) with the NHL’s Columbus Blue Jackets, including three seasons (2012-15) as head coach. Prior to that, he served in coaching capacities with the NHL’s Minnesota Wild (2009-11) and San Jose Sharks (2008-09) as well as the AHL’s Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins (2006-08) and Milwaukee Admirals (2002-06).

Quinn is serving as an assistant coach for Team USA for the fifth time. Previously, he worked with the U.S. Men’s National Team twice (2012, 2007) and helped guide the U.S. Women’s National Team to a pair of silver medals (2000, 1999). Currently the head coach for Boston University’s men’s ice hockey program, Quinn took helm of his alma mater after professional coaching stints with the NHL’s Colorado Avalanche (2012-13) and AHL’s Lake Erie Monsters (2009-12). A 1986 bronze medalist as a player with the U.S. National Junior Team, Quinn also spent two seasons (2002-04) as a head coach with USA Hockey’s National Team Development Program.

Additionally, Matt DeMado (Montclair, N.J.), who has spent the past four seasons as a video assistant with the New Jersey Devils, will serve as video coordinator for a U.S. Men’s National Team for the first time.

Notes: John Hynes and David Quinn spent the 2003-04 season together in Ann Arbor, Michigan, as head coaches for USA Hockey’s National Team Development Program. The two are both alumni of Boston University and have helped the Terriers earn NCAA national championships with Hynes skating on the 1995 championship-winning team and Quinn serving as an associate head coach for the 2009 title-winning squad … Sixteen players have been named to the U.S. Men’s National Team. Teams will play a round-robin format within their group and the top four teams from each group will advance to the quarterfinals.
