BURLINGTON, VT – The RIT women’s hockey team (4-10-2) fell to No. 2 Colgate University (14-2-0), 6-1 in the consolation game of the Windjammer Classic hosted by the University of Vermont on Saturday afternoon.
Kendall Cornine (Kinnelon, NJ/Morristown Beard) scored RIT’s lone goal, a power-play marker 9:20 into the second period to cut Colgate’s lead to 4-1. Brooke Baker (Saline, MI/Saline) fed a pass back to Brittney Gout (Caledon, Ontario/Brampton Canadettes) at the point. Gout’s point shot was deflected by Cornine past Julia Vandyk for her team-best fifth goal of the season. Gout and Cornine combined for nine shots on goal.
Making her first start of the season, Jenna de Jonge (Abbotsford, British Columbia/George Elliot) made 25 saves on 31 shots.
Shelby Perry scored a pair of goals to lead Colgate, while Shae Labbe had a goal and an assist and Kalia Pinkney and Bailey Larson dished out a pair of assists apiece. Megan Sullivan, Lauren Wildfang and Bailey Bennett also scored for the Raiders. Vandyk made 20 saves for the win.
Colgate out-shot RIT, 31-21. RIT was 1-for-6 on the power-play, while Colgate was 0-for-5.
The Raiders jumped out to a 3-0 lead after one period of play on a trio of goals 4:40 apart midway through the frame. Perry opened the scoring at the 8:59 mark, while Labbe scored three minutes later and Wildfang added the third goal with 6:21 left in the period.
Bennett would give Colgate a 4-0 lead 4:02 into the second period before Cornine’s power-play goal. Perry would put the Raiders back up four goals just 2:02 after Cornine’s tally. Sullivan added a third period goal to complete the scoring.
RIT leads the all-time series between the two schools 14-9-2.
RIT skated to a 1-1 draw against host Vermont last night in the Windjammer Classic opener, but the Catamounts advanced by winning a three-round shootout. Colgate fell to Minnesota-Duluth, 4-1 in its Windjammer Classic opener. Claudia Black (Newmarket, Ontario/St. Maximilian Kobe) scores RIT’s lone goal on Friday, while Terra Lanteigne (Hatchet Lake, Nova Scotia/Charles P. Allen) stopped 43 shots.
The Tigers return home next weekend, Dec. 1-2 to play CHA rival Penn State University. On Dec. 1, RIT will hold a Tiger Teddy Bear Toss. Fans are urged to bring a new stuffed animal to throw on the ice after RIT’s first goal. All stuffed animals will be donated to the Rochester Regional Health’s Children’s Unit. There will also be a holiday skate on Sunday, Dec. 3.
