NEW HAVEN, CT — The RIT (1-6-0) women’s hockey team fell 8-2 to host Yale University (2-0-0) on Saturday in the second game of the weekend road trip at David S. Ingalls Rink.
Sophomore Kathryn Kennedy (Hamilton, Ontario) and senior Taylor Thurston (Kanata, Ontario/All Saints Catholic) potted their first goals of the season, while senior Lindsay Stenason (Oakville, Ontario/Appleby Collegiate) added an assist. Yale had seven different players find the back of the net. Freshman Terra Lantegine made 24 saves for RIT, before sophomore Jenna de Jonge (Abbotsford, British Columbia/George Elliot) played the third period in relief, making 10 saves on 13 shots.
Yale out-shot RIT, 42-18. Both teams were 2-for-7 on the power-play.
The scoring began in the first period, as Lanteigne made a pad save off a shot from Jordan Chancellor, but the rebound went right to Yale’s Laura Anderson. The freshman potted her first career goal and put Yale up 1-0. Kara Drexler also added a secondary assist on the play.
After two penalties taken by the Tigers early in the second period, Yale converted on a 5-on-3 power-play. Julia Yetman found the back of the net, from Taylor Marchin and Eden Murray, making it 2-0. However, the Tigers killed off the ensuing 5-on-4 power-play for Yale.
Halfway through the second, Phoebe Staenz put home a rebound off a shot from the point was pushed aside by Lanteigne. Yale added another tally in the period, by Taylor Marchin from the point, with 3:46 left in the period. The Bulldogs added one more tally with 34 seconds left in the period, from Emily Monaghan, and took a 5-0 lead into the third period.
Yale added a pair of goals in the first 10:22 of the third period, before RIT fired back with two of its own, both on the power-play. Kennedy tallied her first goal of the season, assisted by Stenason, with 7:41 left in the period.
Thurston took a shot from the high slot, and followed the puck and back-handed the rebound into the twine for her first of the year moments later, making it a 7-2 deficit. Staenz added another goal for Yale late in the third period, giving her two points on the day.
The Tigers will return to action next weekend for a two-game home series against College Hockey America rival Penn State. The first game will be played at Ritter Arena in a “Throwback Thursday” game on Thursday at 6:05 p.m. The second game will be back at the Gene Polisseni Center on Friday at 2:05 p.m.
