TROY, N.Y. – Junior Jaimie Grigsby scored her seventh goal of the season, but the Engineers fell short in an ECAC Hockey Conference matchup 2-1 to Harvard Friday night.
2:20 seconds into the game, Harvard picked up a penalty for hooking. Rensselaer’s (7-10-4, 4-4-1 ECACH) Shayna Tomlinson had two quick shots before Grigsby found the back of the net for her fifth power play goal of the season on assists from Whitney Renn and Sabrina Repaci.
Six minutes later, Grigsby, Aly Tremblay and Megan Hayes had a 3v1 going to set, but Grigsby’s pass across the crease went untouched.
Harvard (8-4-1, 6-2-1 ECACH) looked as though they were going into the first intermission down a goal, but Becca Gilmore (Wayland, Massachusetts) scored with 23 seconds left in the period on a pass from Kat Hughes (New York, New York) to tie the game 1-1.
\The Crimson controlled the majority of the second period, getting off 29 shot attempts to RPI’s 13. However, after the Engineers drew a penalty for checking halfway through through the period, Tomlinson had a 2v1 breakaway, but the senior’s short handed attempt was stuffed by the Crimson’s Beth Larcom (Middletown, R.I.). With less than minute before the second intermission, Harvard finally broke through with 39 seconds left on a power play goal from Keely Moy (San Diego, California). The freshman’s fifth goal of the season came off assists from Emma Buckles (Toronto, Ontario) and Gilmore.
Down 2-1, RPI got off 13 shots before taking Lovisa Selander out of the net for a 6v5 advantage with 2:17 remaining in regulation. Grigsby, Rens and Lauren Severson each got off shots, but they were all either blocked or saved. The Engineers were given one last chance with two second remaining when Harvard drew a penalty for elbowing, but Josephine Hansen’s last second, 6v4 shot was saved by Larcom.
Larcom (8-3-1) was credited with the win on a 25 save effort, while Selander (7-10-3) picked up the loss with 28 saves. The Swedish netminder is now a mere 17 saves away from breaking the program’s career save record.
RPI returns to Houston Field House tomorrow to take on Dartmouth in their second ECACH game of the weekend. The puck is set to drop at 3 p.m.
