BUFFALO, N.Y. – Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) freshman-to-be Todd Burgess has been drafted by the Ottawa Senators in the fourth round, 103th overall, of the 2016 National Hockey League Entry Draft.
“Congratulations to Todd on this well earned recognition,” said RPI head coach Seth Appert. “His work ethic and character were evident with the improvements he made while leading Fairbanks to another national championship. Our staff is looking forward to helping him continue that development on and off the ice at RPI.”
Burgess, a forward from Peoria, Ariz., played in 60 games for the Fairbanks Ice Dogs of the North American Hockey League (NAHL) last season, registering 38 goals and 57 assists for league-high 95 points. He had a +27 rating and was assessed 42 penalty minutes.
He led the Ice Dogs to the 2016 Roberson Cup as the league’s Most Valuable Player, tallying the more points than the NAHL had seen since 2006-07. He also notched 36 points (15 goals, 21 assists) while appearing in 46 games for Fairbanks in 2014-15.
Todd is the second player in school history to be drafted by the Senators (Bryan Masotta in 1994) and the fourth draftee on the active roster, joining juniors Lou Nanne (Minnesota Wild) and Mike Prapavessis (Dallas Stars), as well as incoming goaltender Chase Perry (Detroit Red Wings).
There have now been 62 Engineers selected all-time by National Hockey League teams.
