BOSTON, MA – Mallory Rushton (Amherst, Nova Scotia/New Hampton Prep) scored on a penalty shot 24 seconds into overtime and Terra Lanteigne (Hatchet Lake, Nova Scotia/Charles P. Allen) made a career-high 50 saves, as the RIT women’s hockey team (4-5-1) defeated Boston University (2-6-1) 2-1 in overtime Saturday afternoon from Agganis Arena.

Rushton was slashed from behind on a breakaway, creating the penalty shot. Rushton came in with a full head of steam, faked the backhand and came back to the forehand, sliding the puck around goaltender Corrine Schroeder for the game-winner, as the Tigers rushed off the bench to congratulate her.

Lanteigne was tremendous in goal for the Tigers, stopping a career-high 50 shots, including all 22 she faced in the third period. She lowered her goals against average to 2.56 and raised her save percentage to .938 in 2017-18.

Shots were 51-25 in favor of Boston University, face-offs were 27-24 in favor of RIT. Boston University had eight power-plays, with RIT’s penalty-killing standing tall, not allowing a goal. The Tigers were 1-for-2 on the power-play.

“I was really excited with how the girls responded today,” said Bruce B. Bates Women’s Hockey Coach Scott McDonald. “Terra (Lanteigne) was outstanding in net today and our penalty-killing unit was even better. It was an exciting way to finish the game with Mallory (Rushton) scoring on a penalty shot.”

The first period was scoreless between the two teams. Then eight minutes into the second period RIT’s Claudia Black (Newmarket, Ontario/St. Maximilian Kobe) scored her first goal of the season off an assist from Logan Land (Turkey Point, Ontario/Holy Trinity Catholic) on a power play, to take the lead 1-0 over Boston University.

Boston University’s Mary Grace Kelley scored in the thirteenth minute from Nara Elia’s and Kristen Schuler’s assist to tie the game 1-1.

Neither team could find the back of the net in the period, sending the game into overtime. Kathryn Kennedy (Hamilton, Ontario/) had one of RIT’s best chances to score with six minutes remaining. She came out of the penalty box and had a clear breakaway, firing a shot that was fought off by Schroeder.

RIT is on the road again Nov. 10-11 when they travel to Robert Morris University for a College Hockey America conference game.
