The University of Minnesota scored a goal in each period on Saturday night to earn a 3-0 win over the St. Lawrence men’s hockey team and a split in the weekend series.

Emil Zetterquist made his second consecutive start after earning the win for St. Lawrence on Friday and made 28 saves in the loss. Eric Schierhorn got the nod between the pipes for Minnesota and needed to make just 12 saves in the win, as the Saints were outshot 31-12.

Ryan Garvey, Carson Dimoff, Keenan Suthers and Philip Alftberg each finished with two shots on goal for St. Lawrence.

With the loss, St. Lawrence falls to 2-9-0 while Minnesota improves to 3-5-1.

Minnesota opened the scoring with Nathan Burke’s first collegiate goal at 8:01 of the first period, as he redirected a pass from Tyler Nanne at the edge of the crease and beat Zetterquist high over his right shoulder. The goal gave the Gophers their first lead of the weekend.

Burke, Nanne and McLaughlin also combined for the Gophers’ second goal of the game at 7:43 of the second period, as the Saints mishandled a bouncing puck at the bottom of the left circle trying to clear the defensive zone and Burke pounced on it for a quick shot top shelf for his second of the game.

Sammy Walker pushed the Gophers lead to 3-0 with 3:29 to play in regulation when he tucked the puck behind Zetterquist’s left pad on a breakaway with Sadek and Novak assisting for Minnesota.

Both team’s failed to convert on a number of power play chances on Saturday, as Minnesota finished 0-for-5 and the Saints were 0-for-4.

The Saints will play a non-conference game against Clarkson at Herb Brooks Arena in Lake Placid on Saturday, November 24.
