Feb. 13: St. Lawrence University’s men’s hockey team came out strong and avoided any post-upset letdown at Appleton Arena Saturday night, dispatching Princeton 4-1 and giving freshman goaltender Arthur Brey his first collegiate win.

Brey, who started in place of Kyle Hayton who was injured in Friday’s 4-3 overtime upset of top-ranked Quinnipiac, improved to 1-2-1 on the season with a 18-save effort which included some solid saves in odd-man situations. Hayton is listed as day to day and is expected to be ready for next weekend’s series at Yale and Brown.

Senior center Tommy Thompson started a three-goal second period flurry with a shorthanded goal, to help send the Saints on their way to the win.

The Saints, now 16-11-2 overall and 10-6-2 in league play dominated the 5-18-2, 2-13-2 Tigers from the start to run their unbeaten streak to 5-0-1 and take sole possession of fourth place in the ECAC with four games left in the regular season. SLU is now 6-1-1 in its last eight and has risen from seventh to fourth, one point behind third-place Harvard who the Saints play on the final night of the season.

“It was a great weekend. To get two points against Quinnipiac and get three out of four for the season against them is something no one else in the league has been able to do and that is a big plus for us. Now we have to focus and go on the road and keep playing the way we are playing. I thought we were very good tonight…I think we came out and set the tone early against Princeton and kind of took them out of the game,” said Saint coach Greg Carvel.

The Saints opened the scoring 5:26 into the game when sophomore defenseman Nolan Gluchowski scored his fifth of the year on a shot from the point which deflected off a defender and over the shoulder of Princeton starting goalie Ben Halford.

Thompson broke in on a two-on-one with the Saints down a man early in the second period and scored his eighth of the season and the eventual game winner at 2:20. Defenseman Gavin Bayreuther made it a 3-0 game as he pinched and scored from the slot at 12:03 and freshman Jacob Pritchard scored his sixth of the season and fourth in the last four games at 13:20 with a shot to the upper corner for a 4-0 lead.

The Saints had chances to expand their lead early in the third period, but Princeton scored the lone goal o fthe period when sophomore David Hallisey picked up a loose puck all alone in the slot and put it over Brey’s shoulder to spoil the shutout bid at 13:55.

“I thought we should have scored more than four goals, but their goaltender made some good saves,” Carvel added. “I didn’t think Arthur had to do too much tonight, but when he did it was breakaways or two-on-ones. We got a little sloppy at times…but we know what Art is…he’s a real good backup behind a real good goalie, Kyle Hayton. We gave Art the game puck tonight, he should have had a shutout, but we had a real bad breakdown on their goal and there was nothing he could do to stop it.”
