By Warren Kozireski — Ryan Schmelzer (Buffalo) tied Cory Conacher’s school record with his 12th game winning goal in overtime and Dylan McLaughlin (Lancaster) had his second four-point effort of the season as Canisius defeated RIT 5-4.
“Towards the end it was a pretty crazy game with all the back-and-forth, but as a line we all felt good, we skated good and glad we could help the team win tonight,” McLaughlin said.
After Canisius took a 3-1 lead on two goals from McLaughlin and the first of the season from East Amherst native Nolan Sheeran, RIT scored twice in just 17 seconds to tie the game 3-3.
Jeff Murray again put the Golden Griffins up 4-3, but RIT rebounded four minutes later on Adam Brubacher’s sixth of the season. That led to Schmelzer’s tap-in off a perfect feed from McLaughlin in overtime. That made Schmelzer the 11th player in the Division I era at Canisius to net 100 career points.
“I don’t know if we expected it to get tied that quickly, so I’m just proud of our team and the way we bounced back from those goals,” McLaughlin said.
The two teams meet again Saturday night at RIT at 7pm.
