Six area High School Hockey Teams will be continuing their quest for a Section VI Championship. Those lucky half-dozen will be playing for Sectional Championships on “Super Sunday,” Sunday, Feb. 24 at Harbor Center in downtown Buffalo.
A Championship press conference was held Thursday morning at Key Bank Center. Mark DiFilippo, Section VI Ice Hockey Chair, introduced the six teams including their coaches as well as a handful of players from each team.
The three games and their times include:
The St. Joe’s Marauders will play St. Mary’s Lancers. at 2:30 p.m. This marks St. Joe’s sixth straight appearance to Super Sunday to battle for the Niagara Cup.
St. Mary’s are the defending Cup champions. This game will be a rematch of last year’s Catholic Boys championship game.
The second game at 4:45 p.m. will feature the battle for the Small School championship. The Grand Island Vikings, who are playing in their first-ever Super Sunday game, will be facing the West Seneca West Indians.
West Seneca West are the defending Section VI champions.
The final game of the evening will have the Orchard Park Quakers taking on the Niagara Wheatfield Falcons at 7 p.m. For the Quakers, it is their first time at the Sunday event.
The Falcons have been in the Large School championship game for eight of the last 10 years. They are the defending Section VI Large School champions.
