The Buffalo Jr. Sabres and St. Michael’s Buzzers combined for a six-goal first period in an offensively-powered match as the Buzzers topped the Jr. Sabres by a score of 6-5.
After a quiet ten minutes to open the game, things heated up in the second half of the period, with Buffalo and St. Michael’s combining for six goals in a span of 6:42.
Dylan Seitz opened the scoring with his fourth of the season to give the Jr. Sabres a 1-0 lead. Nick Bondra & Aaron Reinig notched the assists.
They’d hold the lead for just about two minutes before the Buzzers would tie it up on a goal by A.J. D’Orazio.
39 seconds later, it was St. Michael’s leading the charge to take a 2-1 lead on a goal by Colton Trumbla. Just over two minutes later, Finn Evans tallied to give the Buzzers a two-goal lead.
But the first-period scoring was far from over, and this time it was Buffalo’s turn to steal away a pair of goals.
Josh Biasillo notched his third goal of the season, assisted by Reinig and David Baskerville, to make it 3-2.
Then it was Brenden Dunning’s tally – his sixth of the season – that made it a 3-3 game. Captain Zach Evancho and Bondra got the helpers on the tying goal.
An exciting end to the first period would segue into a quiet start to the middle frame — at least until Mitchell Spring scored his first of the season on a snipe that made its way to the back of the net.
Buffalo would hold onto the 4-3 lead for 8:02, but as was customary on the evening, it would soon once again be a tied game.
After an interference call to Buffalo’s Baskerville, St. Michael’s Michael Andlauer notched a power-play goal for the Buzzers to tie things at four.
As a chippy game continued into the third period – and got more than halfway through without a goal – a bad bounce would once again give the Buzzers a lead.
Mitchell Devins-Cann got the go-ahead goal for St. Mike’s, and though the Jr. Sabres put up a good effort with some strong forecheck, they were unable to tie things up again.
The Buzzers would add one more, as Andlauer notched his second of the night.
Christian DiFelice would notch his fifth goal of the season with 9.7 seconds left on the clock to make it 6-5, but that’s all the team could muster for a late comeback, falling 6-5.
Buffalo outshot St. Michael’s, 40-22.
Chris Berger extended his point streak to five games (1-5), while David Baskerville is now on a three-game streak (1-3).
The Jr. Sabres hit the road this weekend for a game in Lindsay on Friday. They’ll then host the Toronto Lakeshore Patriots next Wednesday, October 21, at 7:35 pm.
