The Skidmore men’s ice hockey team ended No. 7 Hobart hockey’s unbeaten streak at seven games, rallying for a 2-1 victory over the Statesmen in the consolation game of the 2018 Pathfinder Bank/Oswego Hockey Classic this evening in Oswego, N.Y.
Hobart is now 8-3-4 overall. The Thoroughbreds improve to 2-12-1 this year. It’s the third time the teams have met this season, but this game does not count as a conference game. The Statesmen earned 4-2 and 3-2 victories over Skidmore in their two earlier NEHC contests.
Senior Andrew Silard gave Hobart an early 1-0 lead, scoring his first goal of the season just 2:31 into the contest. Juniors Brandon Bistodeau and Matt Pizzo earned the assists. Connor Pelky used a power-play goal to tie the game up at 1-1 for Skidmore. His tally came with 1:38 left in the first. Brandon Borges was credited with the assist.
Chris Javens registered what proved to be the Thoroughbreds’ game-winning goal with 29 seconds left in the second period. Matt Muzyka and Jake McCarthy set up the goal. The Statesmen pulled sophomore goaltender Alexander Connal in the final minutes of regulation for an extra skater, but were unable to net the game-tying goal. Connal finished with 21 saves in 58:17. Bradon Kasel made 39 stops in goal for Skidmore.
Hobart finished with a 40-23 advantage in shots. Skidmore went 1-for-3 on the power play, while the Statesmen were 0-for-6.
Hobart is back in action on Friday, Jan. 12, when it returns to the The Cooler after five straight road games. The Statesmen host Babson for an NEHC game beginning at 7 p.m.
