Statesmen Take Down No. 3 Trinity

The No. 11 Hobart College hockey team scored two third period goals to rally for a 3-2 win over No. 3 Trinity in a non-league game played in Hartford, Conn. The Statesmen improved to 7-2-2 overall, and handed the Bantams their first loss this year.

Trinity is now 6-1-1 overall. The teams will meet again tomorrow, Dec. 9, for another non-league game at 4 p.m. The Statesmen are now unbeaten in their last four games and have earned three straight wins. Three different players scored for Hobart. Senior Vincent Russo scored what proved to be the game winner 8:03 into the third period. Sophomore Alexander Connal played all 60 minutes in goal for Hobart and made a season-high 34 saves.

The Bantams scored the first two goals of the game. Jack McCarthy scored the first at 8:46 into the game. James Callahan and Eric Benshadle set up the play. Just 2:04 into the second, Liam Feeney found the back of the net after passes from Tyler Whitney and Anthony Saitsky.

First-year Ryan Lynch notched his first collegiate goal, putting Hobart on the scoreboard 9:26 into the second period. First-year Travis Schneider and junior Tanner Shaw were credited with the assists.

The Statesmen secured the win with a strong third period. At 6:52 in, junior Jonas Toupal tied the game up with his team-leading ninth goal this year. Senior Jordan Haskell earned the assist. Just 1:11 later, sophomore Will Harrison sent a perfectly placed passed to Russo for what proved to be the game winner. It was Russo’s second goal this season. The Statesmen held off the Bantams for the remainder of regulation, including a 4-on-4 situation late in the third.

Trinity finished with a 36-29 advantage in shots. Each team finished 0-for-3 on the power play. Alex Morin played all 60 minutes in goal for the Bantams and recorded 26 saves.
