William Smith College first-year Devon Strachan was named the ECAC Women’s West Rookie of the Week yesterday. Strachan earns the award following a career-high 39 saves in Monday’s 1-1 tie with nationally ranked Connecticut College.

Making her first start at The Cooler, Strachan played solidly in Monday’s tie against the Camels, who were ranked No. 8 by the USCHO.com poll and No. 7 by D3hockey.com heading into the weekend. After allowing a goal in the final minute of the first period, she stopped the final 25 shots she faced, including all three shots in the overtime period. In three games this season, Strachan has a 2.95 goals against average and a .920 save percentage.

The Herons (3-7-2) opened up 2017 over the weekend, hosting Connecticut College at The Cooler. The Camels defeated William Smith 5-1 on New Year’s Day. Junior Kiley Fewster scored the first goal of the New Year for William Smith at 8:09 of the first period. The goal was Fewster’s third career short-handed goal. On Monday, junior Rebecca Begley scored the game-tying goal at 2:21 of the third period to help the Herons draw level with Connecticut College.

William Smith will be back in action next Wednesday, Jan. 11, when it travels to take on SUNY Canton at 4 p.m. The Herons return to ECAC West play Jan. 14 when it travels to Buffalo State for a pair of games.
