SYRACUSE, N.Y. – (Photo compliments of Syracuse Hockey) – For the second consecutive game, Syracuse goaltender Abbey Miller kept her opponent scoreless. Miller and the Orange hockey team posted another 4-0 shutout win against Lindenwood to complete the weekend sweep and to improve to 2-0 in College Hockey America play.
Miller became the first Orange goaltender to secure consecutive shutouts against the same team in the same weekend. She finished the game with 15 saves and now boasts a 1.40 goals against average on the season.
Syracuse took a 1-0 lead in the first period with a goal from Larissa Martyniuk. It was the first of the season for the senior. Jessica Sibley found Martyniuk with a swift pass from behind the goal and Martyniuk fired it in from ten feet away.
In the second period, ‘Cuse extended its lead with goals from Morgan Blank and Alysha Burriss. Blank scored her first goal of the season on a pass from Laurence Porlier. The third goal came after Dakota Derrer fired a shot that bounced off of the Lindenwood goalie and Burriss was able to put the puck into the net.
With the clock ticking down in the third period, Heather Schwarz scored the final goal of the game on an empty Lindenwood net.
The Orange held a 31-28 advantage in faceoffs in the game. Sibley led the way winning 12 of her 19 opportunities. Overall, Syracuse outshot Lindenwood 36-15.
It was only the fourth time that a Syracuse team shut out an opponent in consecutive games. The most recent was last season when Jenn Gilligan helped the Orange secure shutouts at Union on Jan. 12, 2016 and then against Mercyhurst on Jan. 15.
The Orange is one of three CHA teams to begin league play with a perfect 2-0 record (Robert Morris and Penn State).
Syracuse will continue CHA play at Robert Morris on Nov. 4 and 5.
