MADISON, Wis. – Senior defenseman Allie Munroe netted her third goal of the year in the first period, but it was not enough to lead the Syracuse women’s hockey team to an upset win over No. 1 Wisconsin. The Orange suffered a 6-1 setback to the Badgers Saturday afternoon inside LaBahn Arena.
The Orange move to 4-11-1 overall following the loss, while the top-ranked Badgers improve to 16-1-0.
HOW IT WAS DECIDED
Wisconsin’s Britta Curl scored six minutes into the first period to put the Badgers up, but Munroe would not let that last long. Munroe was in the right place at the right time, collecting a loose puck in front of net and scoring. Sophomore Jessica DiGirolamo earned an assist on Munroe’s third tally of the year.
The Orange and Badgers looked to be heading into the first intermission knotted at one, but Wisconsin’s Alexis Mauermann broke through on a power play opportunity. She delivered the game-winning goal with 30 seconds left to play in the period, giving Wisconsin a 2-1 lead at the end of the first period.
The Badgers tacked on four additional goals across the final two periods of play before winning, 6-1.
OF NOTE
Munroe’s goal was her first since scoring twice at No. 2 Clarkson on Oct. 27. All three of her goals this season have come against the country’s top-ranked teams, and she now leads the Orange in points with 12.
Senior goaltender Maddi Welch, meanwhile, started in net and recorded a career-high 48 saves. That number equals Lucy Schoedel’s mark for fourth most in a single game in program history.
WHAT LIES AHEAD
One more game against the top-ranked Badgers. The puck drops at 1 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 2.
