BOSTON, Mass. – Northeastern took a 1-0 lead against the Syracuse women’s ice hockey team in the first period and the score would not change through the rest of the game.

“We were a half-step behind Northeastern for the first two periods, but we were only down goal,” head coach Paul Flanagan said. “I felt we responded well in the third, we just couldn’t cash in on our offensive opportunities.”

The goal came 9:44 into the game from Heather Mottau on a power play. The Huskies and Orange crowded around the goal and Mottau was able to sneak it past goalie Abbey Miller in traffic.

Both teams had opportunities throughout the game, but like the first game, the goalies put up walls around the net. Miller finished the game with 20 saves and Northeastern’s goalie Brittany Bugalski registered 27.

“Miller had another strong performance in net and our penalty killers worked extremely hard, blocking shots and clearing rebounds,” Flanagan said.

The Orange outshot the Huskies 27-21 in the game. Five different Syracuse players put at least three shots on net.

Syracuse is back in action on Friday, Oct. 21 at Tennity Ice Pavilion where they will host Colgate in a home-and-away series. The following Saturday the two teams will face off in Hamilton, N.Y.
