Taylor Announces Hobart Captains For 2017-18 Season

Hobart College Head Hockey Coach Mark Taylor recently announced that seniors Ben Greiner, Andrew Silard and Jordan Haskell, as well as, juniors Tanner Shaw and Jack Macnee will serve as captains for the 2017-18 season.

“I’m really excited about this leadership group,” said Taylor. “Each individual has risen to this position on a different time frame and brings different ingredients yet they all share the common required traits.”

“Ben transferred here and established himself quickly. Andrew and Jordan cement this group having been a part of the fiber of the program for three years. They have had the privilege of seeing quality leadership before and know their charge to not only keep the culture at a high level but push to make it even better and stronger. Tanner and Jack are two underclassmen that have had an immediate impact on the program in their two years.”

Greiner, a forward who will serve as a captain, transferred from Bowling Green State University. In 2016-17, his first at Hobart, he played in 28 games, notching 16 points on seven goals and nine assists. Greiner scored the game-winning goal in overtime for the Statesmen in the ECAC West tournament championship game, securing a 2-1 victory for Hobart and its third straight conference tournament title. He was tabbed the tournament’s MVP and earned a spot on the all-tournament team.

Also wearing a C, Silard played in 19 games at forward last winter. He recorded seven points on three goals and four assists. Silard earned two assists in a win over the University of New England and scored the game-winning goal in a victory over Cortland. A two-time ECAC West All-Academic selection, Silard has played in 57 career games, registering 11 goals and 16 assists for 27 points.

An alternate captain and forward, Haskell played in 20 games in the 2016-17 season. He scored five goals and had seven assists for a career-high 12 points. Haskell posted a goal and an assist in wins over Cortland and Stevenson and chipped in two assists in a victory over Elmira. He scored the game-winning goal in the win against the Mustangs. A two-time ECAC West All-Academic honoree, Haskell has played in 65 career games and has recorded nine goals and 17 assists for 26 points.

Shaw, an alternate captain and defenseman, led the Statesmen with 19 assists in 27 games last year. He ranked fourth on the team with a career-high 21 points. Shaw tallied two assists in three times and notched an assist in seven straight games during February. A 2017 ECAC West All-Academic selection, Shaw has played in 54 games and has posted seven goals and 25 assists for 32 points. As a first-year, Shaw was named to the ECAC West and USCHO.com All-Rookie teams as well as the ECAC West All-Tournament team.

Macnee, also an alternate captain and defenseman, played in 28 games last season. He tallied three goals and five assists for eight points, notching two assists in a win over Neumann. Both Macnee and Shaw played key roles in the Hobart defense that led the ECAC West in scoring defense (2.38) and penalty kill (87.7%). Macnee earned a spot on the ECAC West All-Academic team last year. He has played in 50 career games and has logged three goals and eight assists for 11 points.

The Statesmen will open the 2017-18 season with a non-league game at Elmira on Oct. 27, at 7 p.m. Following another non-league game against Oswego on Oct. 29, Hobart will open its inaugural season as a member of the New England Hockey Conference on Nov. 3 at the University of Southern Maine at 7 p.m.
