LAKE PLACID, N.Y. — Hannah Brandt (Vadnais Heights, Minn.) tallied two goals, including the game winner, and Lexie Shaw (Troy, Mich.) made 21 saves in an exciting overtime victory as the U.S. Women’s Under-22 Select Team defeated Canada, 2-1, in the final game of the 2015 Under-22 Series here tonight at the 1980 Herb Brooks Arena.
Team USA finished with a 2-1 record in the series and has now won eight of the last nine games at the Under-22 Series, outscoring Canada 30-13 during that span.
“It took us a few shifts to get going early but we picked it up and found our game,” said Ken Klee (Denver, Colo.), head coach of the U.S. Women’s Under-22 Select Team. “We applied a lot of pressure and stuck to our game plan and got the result we wanted in OT. I’m very proud of the team and all the effort they put in during the series.”
Canada opened the scoring at 2:00 of the first period when Victoria Bach skated down the boards with a step on a defender and fired a shot that found its way through Shaw’s pads.
The U.S. got on the board six minutes later at 8:42 when Dani Cameranesi (Plymouth, Minn.) carried the puck into the Canadian zone and dropped a pass to Brandt who fired a shot past Emerance Maschmeyer’s glove hand.
After a scoreless second and third period, the U.S. headed into overtime on the power play. Lee Stecklein (Roseville, Minn.) set up on the point and sent a pass down low to Brandt at the side of the net where she turned and put a shot through the Canadian goaltender for the 2-1 final.
