ITHACA, N.Y. — Alex Rauter had two goals and an assist during regulation time, then Erin O’Connor scored the winning goal on an extra round of the shootout to propel the White team to a 6-5 victory at the Cornell hockey teams’ annual Red-White Game on Saturday night at Lynah Rink.
The intrasquad game featured two 30-minute halves. The men’s and women’s teams alternated pairs of shifts throughout. Power plays were awarded evenly at set times throughout the game, as were four-on-four situations. Any infractions that were detected by the officials resulted in penalty shots.
Goalies Marlene Boissonnault and Paula Voorheis starred for the women’s team, with neither surrendering a goal during regulation time. Corey Hoffman got the scoring started in the game’s fourth minute to give White a 1-0 lead on the only goal to be scored on a penalty shot. Matt Nuttle countered with a power-play goal 14 minutes later for Red, then Rauter’s first goal came on the power play with assists to Brendan Smith and Noah Bauld to give White a 2-1 lead at halftime.
After a long run of scoreless play in the second half, Jeff Malott tied the score at 2 with 9:01 remaining. White then pulled ahead with two goals set up by Luc Lalor just 18 seconds apart. The first was potted by Dwyer Tschantz, then Rauter’s second goal of the game gave White a 4-2 lead with 4:23 left. Holden Anderson’s bullet through traffic and inside the far post with 2:01 remaining closed the scoring during regulation.
Hanna Bunton scored on the first shootout attempt, then Jake Weidner followed with a fake slap shot and backhand flip to give Red its first lead of the night, 5-4. Tschantz kept White alive on the final scheduled round of the shootout, tying the score at 5 before O’Connor’s winner on a backhand.
The women’s team opens its regular season with a two-game non-league series against Mercyhurst at 3 p.m. Friday and Saturday at Lynah Rink. The men’s team will play exhibitions after both of those games at 7 p.m. against UOIT on Friday and Brock on Saturday.
