Thoroughbreds Power Past USM For Weekend Sweep

SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y.—The Skidmore College hockey team completed its first NEHC weekend sweep with a 4-1 win over Southern Maine Saturday afternoon at the Saratoga Springs City Rink.

The Thoroughbreds move to 3-2-1 overall and 2-1-1 in NEHC play, while the Huskies drop to 1-4-1 overall and in conference.

Adam Moodie struck first for Skidmore with a perfect five-hole tally from Austin Rook at 6:51.

The teams traded chances into the second period when Moodie made it 2-0 on a one-timer from Paul Vella’s pass from behind the net. Avery Steele had the second assist on the goal that came at 10:22 of the second.

Skidmore went up 3-0 when Brandon Borges had a wide-open tap in at 16:07 from Tim Allen. Allen drew the attention of Huskie goalie Anthony D’Aloisio before feeding Borges for the goal.

Southern Maine took advantage of its first power play opportunity to get on the board at 6:24 of the third. Adam Withers sniped a shot that just caught the top of the net glove side to cut it to 3-1. Adam Papayoanou and Colin Merrill assisted.

The Thoroughbreds responded with an insurance goal at 10:47. Jeff Kirkwood scored his first goal at Skidmore when he scored from the slot off a well-placed pass from Matt Muzyka. Sam Loizeaux had the second assist.

Skidmore had a 31-22 shot advantage. Brandon Kasel had 21 saves to improve to 3-2-1. D’Aloisio finished with 27 for USM.

The Thoroughbreds are off until the Skidmore Thanksgiving Invitational Nov. 24-25. Skidmore plays Post University in the first round on Nov. 24 at 2 p.m. Salve Regina and Byrn Athyn play at 5 p.m.
