SCHENECTADY, N.Y. – For the first time in program history, three alumni of the Union College men’s hockey team were named to Olympic rosters. Daniel Carr ’14 was named to Canada’s roster while Spencer Foo and Parker Foo will represent the People’s Republic of China in the 2022 Beijing Olympics.
Carr was instrumental in bringing a national title to Schenectady. As a senior, Carr was named an AHCA All-America second-team selection after compiling a team-leading 50 points (22-28-50), including points in all four NCAA Tournament games, and averaged one point per game in Union’s nine NCAA Tournament games during his four-year career.
The former assistant captain racked up 157 points (78-79-157) in 160 career games, graduating as the program’s all-time D-I leading scorer and currently ranking second in scoring from Union’s Division I era. Carr holds Union D-I records in goals scored (78), power-play goals (34), games played (160), single season power-play goals (12), and single-game power-play goals (3). He played in 132 straight games to end his career, the fourth-longest streak ever by a Dutchman.
Since graduating, the Alberta native has split time between the NHL and AHL. He made his NHL debut in 2015 with Montreal and scored a goal on his first shift, and has recorded 37 points (16-21-37) across 117 NHL games with Montreal, Vegas, Nashville, and Washington. He also was named the AHL’s Most Valuable Player in 2019 after recording 71 points in just 52 games. Carr is currently playing in Switzerland’s National League for HC Lugano, where he has scored 14 points (7-7-14) in 13 games this season.
The elder Foo had a fantastic three-year career with the Dutchmen, registering 112 points (46-63-112) and playing in all 113 games over his time in Schenectady, the eighth-longest consecutive game streak in program history. After recording 25 points in each of his first two seasons, Foo had a breakout junior season for Union, setting a school Division I record with 36 assists and potting 26 goals to finish with 62 points, the second-highest single-season total in school history. He was named a Hobey Baker Award finalist and an AHCA All-America first-team selection following his record-setting campaign.
Spencer left Union after his junior season to sign with the Calgary Flames and spent two seasons between Calgary and the Stockton Heat of the AHL. He signed with Kunlun Red Star of the KHL for the 2019-20 season and recorded 43 points (17-26-43) over his first two years, and leads the team with 14 goals and 19 assists through 48 games this season.
The younger Foo was drafted by the Chicago Blackhawks in the fifth round of the 2017 NHL Entry Draft and spent three years in a Union uniform, scoring nine goals with 19 assists for 28 points in 88 games. Parker has played in 67 games in two years at the professional level, including netting seven goals with 10 assists for 17 points so far this season.
The trio of former Dutchmen are scheduled to play one another on Sunday, February 13 at 8:10 a.m. ET in the third round of the group stage. Group A play begins on February 10 when China takes on the United States and Canada faces off with Germany.
The 2022 Olympic Games are set to begin on Friday, February 4 in Beijing, China.
