GENEVA, N.Y.—Hobart College junior Jonas Toupal scored both of the Statesmen hockey team’s goals, including the OT game winner, to secure a 2-1 victory over No. 7 Oswego in a non-league game this afternoon in The Cooler.

The No. 9/10 Statesmen are now 1-1-0 this year and served the Lakers (1-1-0) their first loss of the season. Sophomore Lawson MacDougall added two assists in the win. Sophomore Alexander Connal played all 60:52 in goal for Hobart and made 18 saves.

Oswego came inches away from scoring in the first period. With 6:43 to go, Joey Scorpio clanged a shot off the post, but neither team could get the puck across the line in the first 20 minutes.

The Statesmen struck first in the second period. Just 1:29 in, Hobart capitalized on a power play. Toupal scored his first goal this season, lifting his shot into the top right corner of the goal after passes from MacDougall and junior Jack Macnee. With 10:08 on the clock, it was Hobart first-year Ryan Lynch’s turn to drill a shot off the pipe. The Lakers evened the score with 1:25 left in the second period. Cameron Berry scored the goal from the left post after passes from Mitch Herlihey and Michael Gillespie.

Neither team could find the game winner through regulation, but the Statesmen clinched the win on their first shot of the extra period, just 52 seconds in. Toupal scored from the right side after a feed from MacDougall to seal the win.

The Statesmen finished with a 27-19 advantage in shots. Hobart went 1-for-3 on the power play, and killed the two Lakers’ power-play attempts. Cedric Hansen finished with 25 saves in goal for Oswego.

The Statesmen are back in action on Friday, Nov. 3, when they open NEHC play at Southern Maine at 7 p.m.
