Traversa, Oplinger Receive ECAC Honors

Two members of the Hobart College hockey team garnered ECAC West weekly awards as announced late yesterday by the conference office. Senior forward Tommaso Traversa (Torino, Italy) was tabbed the Player of the Week and first-year goaltender Frank Oplinger (Sewickley, Pa.) was named the Rookie of the Week.

 

Traversa led the Statesmen with four points on two goals and two assists in two ECAC West victories this weekend. In Friday night’s 5-2 win over Nazareth, he helped to set up what proved to be the game-winning goal early in the second period. In Saturday’s 5-4 overtime victory over Utica, Traversa produced two goals and an assist. He notched the Statesmen’s first goal just 38 seconds into the game. Traversa then set up Hobart’s third goal giving the Statesmen a 3-1 lead in the second period. After Utica rallied to take a 4-3 lead in the second, Traversa registered the game-tying goal at 11:41 in the third period, sending the game into overtime. Traversa has produced three goals and two assists for five points this season.

 

Oplinger played all 121:34 in goal over the weekend. He posted a 2.96 GAA and a .924 save percentage and made a total of 73 saves. In the win over the Golden Flyers, Oplinger made a season-high 45 saves. On Saturday against the Pioneers, Oplinger turned aside 28 shots. He is now 3-0-0 in goal and is sporting a .915 save percentage and a 2.97 GAA this season.

 

The Statesmen will be back in action this weekend, when the host Elmira for ECAC West games at The Cooler on Friday, Nov. 21, and Saturday, Nov. 22. Both games will begin at 7:30 p.m.
