Utica, NY – The Utica College women’s ice hockey team hosted Becker College on Saturday and skated away with a 3-0 victory after netting three third period goals.
UC (2-1) dominated play in the first two periods, only allowing Becker (0-3) to take eight total shots. In comparison, Utica was able to place 35 shots on goal before the third period. Heading into the second intermission, the score remained tied at 0-0.
In the final period of play, the Pioneers cashed in on their opportunities. Six minutes and 44 seconds into the third, Olivia Hirschy deflected the puck past Becker’s goaltender to score the first goal of the contest. Hirschy’s first goal of the 2017-18 season was assisted by Katrina Cornick and Rebecca Brown.
The second Pioneer goal on the day was scored by Elizabeth Dohner (Highlands Ranch, CO/Colorado Selects), assisted by Kayla Dion (Colchester, VT/Boston Shamrocks) and Taylor Osowski (Highlands Ranch, CO/Colorado Selects). Dohner’s score marks her first of the season. With five minutes left in the third period, UC led by a score of 2-0. As the final seconds on the clock ticked down, Kayla Dion (Colchester, VT/Boston Shamrocks) netted one more goal for the team right before the final buzzer to make the score 3-0. Dion’s first goal of the year was assisted by Veronique Lortie (Chambly, Quebec/Berkshire School) and Elizabeth Dohner (Highlands Ranch, CO/Colorado Selects).
UC out shot Becker 59-10 in the win. Utica’s goaltender, Gabrielle Igo, made ten saves in the game on her way to earning her first collegiate career shutout. Becker’s Madison Rigsby recorded an impressive 56 saves in the loss.
The Pioneers return to action on Sunday for another home game at the Utica Memorial Auditorium, as they host Manhattanville College. The puck is set to drop at 3 p.m.
