COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – Matthew Curley (Madrid, N.Y.), current head coach of the University of Alaska Anchorage men’s hockey team, has been named head coach of the U.S. Under-17 Men’s Select Team that will compete in the 2019 Under-17 Five Nations Tournament in Füssen, Germany.
Curley will be joined behind the bench by assistant coaches Mike Corbett (Green Bay, Wis./University of Alabama-Huntsville), Dave Caruso (Roswell, Ga./Ohio State University) and Rich Hansen (New York, N.Y./USA Hockey).Curley will be serving on a U.S. staff in international competition for the fifth time and his first as head coach. Most recently, he was an assistant coach for the U.S. Under-17 Men’s Select Team that placed third at the 2018 Five Nations Tournament.
Additionally, Curley was an assistant coach for the U.S. Under-18 Men’s National Team during the 2011, 2013 and 2015 International Ice Hockey Federation Under-18 Men’s World Championships, helping the United States to gold medals in 2011 and 2015.
Curley also served as an assistant coach with USA Hockey’s National Team Development Program from 2010-2012.The U.S. support staff will feature two returnees from last year’s staff in athletic trainer Kevin Margarucci (Colorado Springs, Colo.) and team physician Dennis Sullivan (Portland, Maine).
Additionally, Sean Schmidt (Ithaca, N.Y.) will fulfill equipment manager duties, Bill McClellan (St. Paul, Minn.) will serve as team leader and Kenny Rausch (Colorado Springs, Colo.), USA Hockey’s director of youth hockey, will serve as general manager.
The roster for the 2019 U.S. Under-17 Men’s Select Team will be chosen following the conclusion of the week-long Boys Select 16 Player Development Camp, which opens today at Northtown Center in Amherst, New York.
Notable NHL and international players who have represented the U.S. Under-17 Men’s Select Team include Brock Boeser (2013), Dustin Brown (2000), Patrick Kane (2004), Ryan McDonagh (2005) and Troy Terry (2013).USA Hockey’s annual Player Development Camps provide top young players with on- and off-ice training and instruction as well as the opportunity to compete at the national level against other top players from their age group. At the 2019 NHL Draft from June 21-22, 59 American players were drafted, including 52 who skated in a USA Hockey Player Development Camp.For a camp roster and schedule, click here.
NOTES: In addition to the U.S., the 2019 Under-17 Five Nations Tournament will also include teams from Switzerland, Czech Republic, Slovakia and Germany … Last year, Team USA skated to its 12th consecutive top-three finish, posting two wins and two losses to take third place … Since 2007, the United States has claimed first place at the Five Nations tournament seven times, the most recent championship coming in 2017.
