Atlantic Hockey Weekly Award Winners – January 31st
Atlantic Hockey has announced its Travel Team USA Weekly Award winners for the week ended January 29, 2017. Canisius’ Dylan McLaughlin, a pair of Bentley skaters, Brett Orr and Jonathan Desbiens, and Robert Morris goalie Dalton Izyk all earned recognition for their play last week.
Player of the Week
Dylan McLaughlin – Canisius
Sophomore, Forward – Lancaster, NY/Cedar Rapids RoughRiders
McLaughlin racked up seven points on four goals and three assists to help Canisius extend its unbeaten streak to seven games with three wins against Niagara and AIC last week. He had a point in each contest, extending his point streak to a career-best seven games. McLaughlin had a goal and an assist in Tuesday’s 4-1 win over Niagara, then had three goals and two assists during a weekend sweep of AIC.
Defensive Player of the Week
Brett Orr – Bentley
Freshman, Defense – Elkhorn, MB/Portage Terriers
Orr tied for the team lead in points with four, all on assists, in the team’s road sweep of RIT. He had two assists in each game. Orr had the secondary assist on the goal that went down as the game-winner in each game. He now has 12 assists in the last 8 games.
Goalie of the Week
Dalton Izyk – Robert Morris
Senior, Goalie – Oswego, NY/Indiana Ice
Izyk was the lone goaltender in NCAA hockey not to surrender a goal last week, as the Colonials senior pitched 94:11 in shutout minutes across two games at Holy Cross. Izyk entered Friday’s 4-3 loss early in the second period and didn’t allow a goal during the final 34:11, making 13 saves. Izyk started in goal in Saturday’s 6-0 win, making 25 saves for his sixth career shutout and first win of the season. The start marked the first for Izyk since sustaining an injury on Nov. 5.
Rookie of the Week
Jonathan Desbiens – Bentley
Freshman, Forward – Montreal, QUE/West Kelowna Warriors
Desbiens had four goals in Bentley’s sweep of RIT over the weekend. He had a hat trick on Saturday, the first by a Bentley player this season, in the 6-3 win to complete the sweep. He had a goal in each period. Desbiens also had a goal in the 3-2 victory on Friday, a power play goal in the 1st period, which was the game’s first goal.
