POTSDAM, NY—The Union College women’s ice hockey team held No. 4/6 Clarkson scoreless for the first 25 minutes, before falling 4-1 on Saturday afternoon at Cheel Arena.
Jamie Smith had six shots on goal during the game While Kathryn Davis and Hannah Erickson had four and three blocked shots, respectively. Melissa Black and Leah Patrick shared time in the net. Black tallied 28 saves in the first two periods, giving her a grand total of 976 on the year (she is tied for ninth in career saves and fourth in single-season). Patrick made 13 in the third period.
The Dutchwomen and Golden Knights each held their own as neither team could find the back of the net in the first period. Clarkson’s netminder McKenzie Johnson made four saves in the first, while Black made 14.
In the second period, Union prevented Clarkson from scoring for the first five minutes until Shannon MacAulay passed Black off an assist from Loren Gabel. Nine minutes later Cayley Mercer found the back of the net with assists from Erin Ambrose and Savannah Harmon. Two minutes later she completed the same task.
Union entered the third period down 3-0. The Dutchwomen and Golden Knights battled for the first 11 minutes until Loren Gabel posted a goal that found its way past Patrick. Two minutes later, Union’s Smith picked up a loose puck in Clarkson’s zone at the top of the circle after a broken stick prevented a pass out of the zone. Smith went in and scored on the low glove side.
Union returns home to take on Dartmouth on Friday, February 12 at 7 p.m., and Harvard on Senior Day on Saturday, February 13 at 4 p.m.
