SCHENECTADY, NY – The Union College women’s hockey team fell to Penn State 8-1 in the opener of their weekend series Friday night.
The Dutchwomen found themselves down early on as Amy Petersen netted a goal 30 seconds into the game to make it 1-0 in favor of the Nittany Lions. Petersen would tack on two more in the period to complete her hat trick and to put Penn State up 3-0 at the first intermission.
Union came out firing in the second half putting 20 shot on net. The breakthrough for the Dutch came when Katelynn Russ picked up a Kathryn Davis rebound and slotted it home.
Russ’ first career goal made the score 5-1 in favor of Penn State. Davis and Cheyenne Harris recorded assists on the goal.
The Dutchwomen continued to pepper Penn State goalie Daniela Paniccia but, the netminder was up to the test finishing with 40 saves on the night.
Laura Bowman also finished with a hat trick for the Nittany Lions as they tallied three more goals after the Union goal.
Union and Penn State are back in action today as puck drop is scheduled for 3:00 p.m. at Messa Rink.
