POTSDAM, N.Y. – Union started its weekend trip to the North Country in fine fashion, posting a 4-1 victory over Clarkson at Cheel Arena Friday evening.

Daniel Ciampini scored his NCAA-leading 23rd goal of the season, matching his total from last season. In goal, Colin Stevens made 29 saves, holding the Golden Knights off the board for 57 minutes.

Union built a 2-0 lead after one period on goals from Ciampini and Mike Vecchione. Matt Wilkins, having just returned from the penalty box, dropped a backhanded pass to Ciampini in the slot at the 9:08 mark. The helper extended Wilkins’ points streak to five games. Vecchione then scored with 1:35 left in the period, stripping the puck at the center red line and scoring on a breakaway. It was Union’s seventh shorthanded goal of the season, tying the team record set in 2002-03.

Union’s freshman class generated the only goal of the second period, a power play tally from Nick DeSimone. Ryan Scarfo and Spencer Foo assisted on the play as Clarkson surrendered its first power play goal in six games (having killed off 19 straight opportunties).

Clarkson finally broke through with 2:46 left in the game on Kelly Summers’ power play goal.

Union travels to St. Lawrence tomorrow night.

Notes:
Ciampini absorbed a hit at the 9:03 mark of the third period and did not take another shift. CU’s Kevin Tansey was issued a major for contact to the head and received a game disqualification … Union has won four straight games versus Clarkson.
