ITHACA, N.Y. – Union will be spending the first round of ECAC Hockey playoffs on the road.

The Dutchmen snapped their lengthy scoreless streak, but still came up short in a 2-1 loss to Cornell Saturday night at Lynah Rink. The loss extended the team’s losing streak to five games, and ended hopes of home ice for the postseason.

Cornell scored first on a goal-mouth scrum with 1:47 left in the first period. Dwyer Tschantz jammed in a rebound just as a Union penalty expired.

The Big Red added to their lead in the second period when John Knisley netted a short-handed goal, lifting a backhander into the corner of the net at the 8:44 mark.

Daniel Ciampini cut the deficit in half at 2:39 of the third period, knocking in a rebound in front of the crease. Mike Vecchione and Max Novak assisted on the power play goal, which ended Union’s scoreless streak at 223:40.

Union will host St. Lawrence next Friday (Feb. 27) on the final weekend of the regular season.

Notes:
Ciampini’s 24 goals are the second-most in a Union season … Cornell head coach Mike Schaffer missed the game with the flu … Cornell entered the contest sporting the third-best defense (1.88 gpg) in the country.
