SCHENECTADY, N.Y. – Looking for a split, Union had to settle for a heart-breaking 2-1 overtime loss to Rensselaer Saturday night at Messa Rink.
Viktor Liljegren’s overtime game-winner at 2:41 sealed a late comeback for the Engineers (3-5, 2-0 ECACH) who completed a weekend sweep of the ECAC Hockey series against their Capital District rivals.
Liljegren jammed three shots into the pads of Colin Stevens, and the third went in after the on-ice officials confirmed the goal with video review. Curtis Leonard and Milos Bubela assisted on the play that sent RPI to its third-straight win against Union.
Rensslear forced overtime after tying the contest with 6:40 remaining in regulation. Mark McGowan converted on a turnover in the Dutchman offensive zone, finishing a one-timer in the slot.
Union held on to a 1-0 lead most of the game after Spencer Foo scored from the right faceoff circle at 14:20 of the first period. It was the freshman’s fourth goal of the season, giving him points in seven of eight games.
The Dutchmen finished with a 35-27 advantage in shots, and didn’t take a penalty in the game. They were, however, presented with six power play opportunities but weren’t able to convert.
Union (5-3, 0-2 ECACH) will host Dartmouth (Nov. 7) and Harvard (Nov. 8) next weekend.
