PROVIDENCE, R.I.—Senior goaltender Alex Sakellaropoulos made 26 saves and Ryan Scarfo, Mike Vecchione and Spencer Foo each scored to lift the No. 14/15 Union College men’s hockey team to a 3-1 win against Brown, Friday night at Meehan Auditorium. The Dutchmen, who extend their win streak to three, move to 11-3-2 overall and 7-1-1 in ECAC Hockey, while Brown goes to 2-9-0 overall and 1-6-0 in conference play.
The reigning ECAC Hockey Goalie of the Week, Sakellaropoulos stopped nine shots in the first, 12 in the second and five in the third to go to improve to 10-1-1 on the season.
Vecchione’s goal was his Division I-leading 17th of the season, while Foo’s goal extended his point streak to 14 games. Ryan Walker and Jeff Taylor pushed their respective point streaks to three games, each producing an assist. Luc Brown and Brett Supinski also each contributed a helper.
Union opened the scoring at 7:02 of the first when Scarfo scored on a 2-on-1 on a feed from Walker. Walker carried the puck into the offensive zone and slid a pass to Scarfo, who guided the puck past a helpless Gavin Nieto for his fourth of the season. The assist was Walker’s fourth in the last three games. Brown also registered an assist on the goal.
Vecchione made it 2-0 1:32 into the second with his third goal in as many games, converting on a shorthanded breakaway, but Tommy Marchin pulled one back for the Bears with 49.9 seconds left in the frame with a wrist shot from the top of the right circle.
The Dutchmen netted the final goal of the game midway through the third period when Foo rifled home a wrist shot from the top of the left circle at 10:23 for his eighth of the season. The goal was Foo’s 24th point (6 g, 18 a) in the last 14 games.
Union outshot Brown 35-27 and finished 1-for-5 on the power play, while the Bears went 0-for-4.
The Dutchmen travel to Yale to take on the Bulldogs at 7 p.m., Saturday, Dec. 10.
