SCHENECTADY, NY – The Union College women’s ice hockey team fell to ECAC opponent Dartmouth University, 3-2 this evening.
The Dutchwomen stormed the gates and came out aggressive for the first leg of the game. With just about 15 minutes left to go in the period, Haley Shugart scored on a laser beam shot to the back of the net. Shugart’s goal came just 42 seconds into a Dartmouth hooking penalty.
The Big Green went on to commit two more back-to-back penalties, for too many skaters on the ice. However, the Dutch were unable to capitalize on the two opportunities, and it would come back to haunt them.
At the 12:16 mark, Dartmouth’s Christina Rombaut would net her second goal of the season and tie up the game. Nearly two minutes later, the Big Green would strike again and take over control of the game. With the 2-1 lead, Dartmouth closed out the first period out shooting the Dutchwomen eight shots to five.
Shugart opened up the next period scoring her second goal of the evening, just 37 seconds into play. With the score now settled at two goals apiece, the Dutchwomen settled in and began playing a more evenly matched period.
Fifteen minutes later, Dartmouth managed to steal its second lead of the game. At the five-minute mark, a Dutchwomen shot deflected off of a Dartmouth skater. The deflected puck managed to sneak its way up the ice, and with two fallen Dutchwomen, Rombaut earned herself a breakaway. Despite the one-on-one matchup, goaltender Coco Francis made an incredible save. However, Rombaut’s teammate, Caroline Shaunessy was not far behind her and knocked in the rebound.
The Dutchwomen entered the third period trailing Dartmouth 3-2, but neither team would score for the remainder of the game.
With Dartmouth’s victory tonight, it is the Big Green’s second win in ECAC play. The Dutchwomen fall to 3-6 in league play, but return to action tomorrow afternoon to take on Harvard at 3 p.m.
