SCHENECTADY, NY – The Union College Dutchwomen defeated the Harvard Crimson for just the second time in program history tonight, 3-1.
After the first 20 minutes of play, the Dutchwomen and Crimson were at a stalemate. Despite both teams each earning two power plays, neither were able to capitalize on the advantage. Harvard led Union in shots on goal, 12 to six after the first period.
Six minutes into the second period, first year Makayla Mori and senior Katie Laughlin were battling the Crimson on the boards. Laughlin came up with the puck and managed to make a clean pass off to Arianna Kosakowski. From the point, the Massachusetts native was able to knock a wrister past Harvard’s netminder.
With both teams dumped in front of Harvard’s net, Union would score again less than four minutes later. From rebound after rebound, Katelynn Russ took a shot, followed by Ava Reynolds and the goal was finished off by Sophomore Cheyenne Harris. The Dutchwomen went into the second intermission with a 2-0 lead.
Harvard’s Haley Mullins snuck around the net and dumped the puck in around the 12-minute mark to cut the Crimson’s deficit in half in the third period. Union played a defensive game for the latter half of the third period as Harvard continued to apply the pressure, with a pulled goalie and six-to-five skater ratio. However, a loose puck and fallen skaters allowed Harris to run away with the puck and score on the empty net.
Harris’ goal solidified the Union victory, 3-1.
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE:
Kosakowski’s goal, the first goal of the evening, broke the all-time record for team goals scored at home by the Dutchwomen, in the Division I era. Union now has 33 home goals in 13 games, the previous record was 30 in 19 games during the 2013-14 season.
Kosakowski now tied the record for most goals by a defender in a single season with five.
The Dutchwomen now have 28 goals in league play, second most all-time. Union scored 29 ECAC goals during the 2014-15 season.
Reynolds earned her first point of her sophomore campaign in tonight’s victory.
Harris’ first goal tonight was her third game winning goal of the season, the most on the team thus far for the 2017-18 season.
