Wesley Chapel, Fla. — Four different U.S. Women’s National Team players scored goals as the U.S. topped Canada, 4-2, here today in Wesley Chapel, Florida, in game two of the 2017 Four Nations Cup.
“The score is really a reflection of the team’s commitment,” said Robb Stauber, U.S. Women’s National Team head coach. “Anyone who watched this game tonight saw a team that was very committed from start to finish. We did so many things right tonight, and it is a great thing to build off of as we continue the tournament.”
Team USA opened the scoring 15 minutes into the opening frame when Cayla Barnes (Eastvale, Calif.) netted a power-play goal on a shot that deflected off a Canadian defender. With 2:50 left in the frame, Megan Bozek (Buffalo Grove, Ill.) struck with a slap shot from the top of the right circle, doubling the U.S. lead.
Canada notched the lone goal of the second period 3:07 into play when Rebecca Johnston skated the puck down the right side and tucked a shot right past U.S. goaltender Maddie Rooney (Andover, Minn.), cutting the deficit in half.
Just under a minute into the final period, Kendall Coyne (Palos Heights, Ill.) gave the U.S. a two-goal advantage when she put home a loose puck during a net-front scramble. With 4:29 on the clock, Canada scored a shorthanded goal to bring the team within one goal of Team USA. Alex Carpenter (North Reading, Mass.) then fired a wrist shot straight to the back of the net with just under four minutes left, accounting for the 4-2 final. Rooney stopped 20 of 22 shots in the victory.
Team USA continues Four Nations Cup play Friday (Nov. 10) against Sweden at 6:30 p.m. ET. That contest will be streamed live on HockeyTV.com.
