POTSDAM, NY- The Utica College women’s hockey team got back on track Friday as it topped host SUNY Potsdam 3-0 in ECAC West Conference action. Junior Keira Goin (Dobbs Ferry, NY/Hotchkiss School) made 26 saves for her sixth shutout of the season.
The Pioneers used one goal in each period to pick up their tenth win of the season. Utica, now 10-5-1 overall, moves into a tie with Oswego State for third place in the conference standings as UC is 6-2-1 in league play. Potsdam falls to 6-11-2 (1-10-1 ECAC West) on the year. The teams return to action Saturday as they wrap up the weekend series in Utica. Game time is scheduled for 4 p.m.
Freshman Taylor Dion (Colchester, VT/Boston Shamrocks) got the Pioneers on the board at 15:55 of the first period with her second of the year. Sophomore Kelly Critzer (West Salem, OH/Ohio Flames) assisted on the play. The Pioneers added an insurance tally at 6:48 into the second period as sophomore transfer Meghan Power (Windsor, Ontario/Southwest Wildcats) netted her first goal in a Pioneer uniform to put UC up 2-0. Classmate Carlie Smith (Grimsby, Ontario/St. Catharine’s Chaos) added her first assist of the season on the play.
Utica capped off the scoring with just under two minutes remaining as senior Morgan Reed (Fort Myers, FL/Cushing Academy) netted her team-leading 13th goal of the season. Junior Gabrielle Schnepp (Northville, MI/Belle Tire) and freshman Lauren Patterson (Burlington, Ontario/Oakville) picked up the assists. With the point, Reed moves in to fourth place on the College’s career scoring list, surpassing Katie Juliano ’05. Reed now has 91 points in 97 games at UC. Schnepp meanwhile, has a career-high 16 assists this season.
Goin was once again lights out in net as she picked up her eighth career shutout. She moves into fourth nationally with a .960 save percentage and her 1.00 goals against average ranks fifth in the country. Abby Tardelli had 34 saves in the loss for Potsdam.
