The Utica College men’s hockey team shutout the Grenoble Under-22 team 6-0 in international play on Tuesday. Justin Derlago (Winnipeg, Manitoba/Selkirk (MJHL)) posted three assists for the Pioneers, while Mikhail Bushinski (Woodbury, MN/Kenai River (NAHL)) and Luc Boby (Chicago, IL/Kalamazoo (NAHL)) each added one goal and one assist.
Roman Ammirato (Williamstown, NJ/Union College (ECAC)) notched two helpers while Connor Schmidt (Monroe, MI/Arizona State (D1-Ind.)), Zach Borsoi (Brossard, Quebec/Gloucester (CCHL)), and Jacob Gerson (Colorado Springs, CO/Hampton Roads (USPHL)) also added two assists each. Shawn Lynch (Syracuse, NY/Ottawa Jr. Senators (CCHL)) also chipped in with one assist.
Patrik Virtanen (Vantaa, Finland/Lincoln (USHL)) totaled a team-best 11 saves, while Henry Dill (Columbus, OH/UMASS (Hockey East)) and Gianluca Baggetta (Maple, Ontario/North York (OJHL)) added nine saves. The Pioneers out shot Grenoble 41-29 on the afternoon.
Kevin Valenti (Queensbury, NY/Northern Cyclones (EHL)), Mikhail Bushinski (Woodbury, MN/Kenai River (NAHL)), Luc Boby (Chicago, IL/Kalamazoo (NAHL)) and Vince Stefan (Pittsburgh, PA/Kenai River (NAHL)) each added a first period goal to give the Pioneers an early 4-0 lead. Dalton Carter (Toledo, OH/Northern Cyclones (EHL)) scored in the second period and Devin Warfield (Raleigh, NC/Daniel Webster (D3-Ind.)) added a third period goal to seal the scoring on the afternoon.
Utica is now 9-2 all-time in international play.
Every three years the NCAA permits college teams to take part in an international exchange trip intended to expose the student-athletes to different cultures.
