PURCHASE, N.Y. – The Manhattanville College winter athletic teams will be playing their respective games this weekend in support of the Quinn for the Win Foundation, an organization that supports ALS research and has a personal tie to the Valiants.
Pat Quinn, a close high school friend of men’s basketball head coach Pat Scanlon, was diagnosed with Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis on March 8, 2013. Immediately following his diagnosis, he made a commitment to help find a cure for the disease.
“We are honored that Pat is allowing us to raise awareness and funds for his terrific foundation,” said Scanlon. “I have known Pat for a long time and he is an amazing prson. I have the utmost respect for his toughness, strength, and humility. He is an inspiration to me and I am sure this weekend he will become one to many more. I encourage our community to come out and support our program, but more importantly to support Pat and his foundation.”
Along with starting the Quinn for the Win Foundation, Quinn is also credited with helping to begin the Ice Bucket Challenge in 2014. His foundation continues to support the challenge, joining the ALS Association in their campaign “Every August”, hoping to revive the challenge each year in August until a cure is found.
Pat remains a passionate advocate for ALS research, having spoken before Congress about the disease and continues to give speeches at schools, universities, as well as Facebook and Google. In 2014, Quinn was nominated for TIME Magazine’s Person of the Year.
This weekend, all ticket sales from the men’s hockey game versus Elmira Friday and Saturday, and the men’s and women’s basketball double-header Saturday against King’s will be donated to the Quinn for the Win Foundation. Along with ticket sales, the three teams along with women’s hockey and indoor track and field will be accepting donations which will also go directly to Quinn’s foundation. Quinn will be in attendance and will speak to fans in attendance about the foundation and disease during halftime of the men’s basketball game Saturday afternoon.
