Wayne Gretzky Narrates E:60 Special Honoring Humboldt Broncos Hockey Team
Year After Tragedy, E:60 “Forever Broncos” on Victims, Survivors, Families and Fight to Move Forward
NHL Hall of Famer Wayne Gretzky is the voice for a special E:60 program “Forever Broncos,” telling the intimate and untold stories behind the tragic bus crash involving the Humboldt Broncos junior hockey team. The result of a year-long collaboration with Canada’s TSN, the program airs Sunday, April 7, at 9 a.m. ET on ESPN.
“We are devoting the entire hour Sunday morning to a remarkable, emotional story of strength, healing, courage and resilience,” said executive producer Andy Tennant. “We will take you to a hockey town deep in the heart of Saskatchewan and introduce you to some extraordinary people. Considering the role hockey plays in their lives, we asked the greatest player ever to lend his voice to this special story.”
On April 6, 2018, the Humboldt Broncos were on the way to a playoff game when their bus collided with a semi-truck that had run a stop sign. Sixteen of the 29 people on the bus were killed – players, coaches, and team staff. As news of the tragedy spread, an entire nation and the hockey world reached out to support a community in mourning.
E:60’s Jeremy Schaap and producer Mike Farrell traveled to central Canada to document the road to recovery for the Humboldt families and the surviving hockey players and coaches.
As Scott Taylor, who lost his son Evan, says in the film, “The community needs the Broncos probably more than ever. Hockey is where we live, where we can best meet and overcome our pain and wrongs and deaths. Life is just a place where we spend time between games.”
In addition to airing on the award-winning E:60, “Forever Broncos,” will also be available on demand on the ESPN App.
