DANBURY, Conn. – After an opening-weekend sweep, the Manhattanville College men’s hockey team took home two of the three weekly awards from the ECAC West Conference on Monday, as junior Teagan Waugh (Nanaimo, B.C./Powell River Kings (BCHL)) was named ECAC West Player of the Week and freshman Cory Anderson (Bakersfield, Calif./Notre Dame Hounds (SJHL)) was tabbed ECAC West Rookie of the Week.
Both skaters played major roles in Manhattanville’s perfect start to the year, which saw the Valiants defeat Salve Regina University, 5-4 (OT), on Friday before a 6-1 victory over Daniel Webster College on Saturday.
Waugh, who earns the honor for the second time in his career, tied for the team lead with four points over the weekend, scoring two goals and adding two assists. The junior co-captain registered a game-high three points on Friday night with two goals and an assist, scoring once in each of the first two periods and then setting up classmate Nolan Marshall (Drumheller, Alta./Camrose Kodiaks (AJHL)) for the game-winner in overtime. He added another assist on Saturday against the Eagles, coming on the power play in the third stanza.
In 56 games for Manhattanville, Waugh has scored 16 goals with 15 assists for 31 points, including a team-leading 10 goals and 16 points a season ago.
Anderson made a splash in the first week of his collegiate career, recording three points on two goals and an assist over the two games. He had two points in his collegiate debut on Friday night, putting the Valiants up 2-1 with his first career goal in the first period and then picking up the primary assist on Waugh’s second-period score. On Saturday, he scored one of Manhattanville’s four third-period power-play goals as the Valiants put away a pesky DWC squad.
The Valiants, who are receiving votes in both the USCHO.com and D3hockey.com Division III national polls for the first time since 2013, will begin ECAC West Conference play this weekend at Hobart College on Friday night and at Elmira College on Saturday evening.
