Weigman Becomes Cortland’s All-Time Saves Leader

CORTLAND, N.Y. – Senior goalie Drew Weigman (Annapolis, MD/Northern Cyclones) turned aside 38 shots to become Cortland’s all-time saves leader, and sophomore Douglas Elgstam (Stockholm, Sweden/New Jersey Rockets) netted the game-tying goal early in the third period as the Cortland men’s hockey team played to a 2-2 overtime tie versus Plattsburgh Friday night in SUNYAC action at Alumni Arena. Weigman now has 2,832 saves in his career, surpassing the old mark of 2.821 set by John Larnerd from 1999-2003.

Senior Paul Fregeau (Los Angeles, CA/Des Moines Buccaneers) also scored a goal for the Red Dragons (9-13-2, 4-9-2 SUNYAC), who were eliminated from conference postseason play when Potsdam upended Oswego, 1-0. Weigman, sophomores Sean Perichak (Oakville, ON/Markham Royals) and Martin Lavallee (Goose Bay, NL/Nepean Raiders) and freshman Scott Docherty (Oakville, ON/Georgetown Raiders) each collected an assist.

Junior Cam Owens (Wilmington, MA/Islanders Hockey Club) tallied one goal and one assist for the Cardinals (12-11-1, 6-8-1). Junior Cole Stallard (Atlanta, GA/New Hampshire Jr. Monarchs) also scored a goal with sophomores Joe Drabin (Rochester/Wenatchee Wild) and Philip Middleton (Vail, CO/Salmon Arm Silverbacks) and freshman Rich McCartney (Hershey, PA/Philadelphia Revolution) picking up one assist apiece. Freshman goalie Jimmy Poreda (Tonawanda/Connecticut Jr. Rangers) made 24 saves.
