SHELTON, Conn. – The William Smith College ice hockey team collected its second straight win with a 4-1 victory over Division I Sacred Heart at the Sports Center of Connecticut this evening. Four different players tallied goals for the Herons.
William Smith (6-10-2) jumped out to a 1-0 lead at the 7:45 mark of the first period when first-year Stephanie Hampton notched her fourth goal of the season . Fellow first-year, Maura Mulligan, and sophomore Krista Federow were credited with assists on the goal. Hampton redirected a shot past Pioneers goalie, Nicole Magee. Sophomore Rebecca Begley doubled the Heron’s lead at 18:55 of the first period. With the Herons on the power play, Begley collected a pass and fired a shot into the goal. Hedi Drosteand Mulligan were credited with assists on the goal.
Sacred Heart (8-9-2) cut into the William Smith lead at 2:36 of the second period when Lily Clearly slipped a shot pastLaurel Brown. Haley Payne was awarded an assist on the goal. The Pioneers peppered Brown in the period but could only get one shot past her.
The Herons regained a two goal lead at the 7:15 mark of the middle period. Federow deposited a wrist shot behind Amanda Fontaine, who had come on in relief at the start of the second period. Federow’s sixth goal of the season came from inside the left faceoff circle. Sophomore Emily Burton was awarded an assist on the goal.
First-year Lindsay Brown’s first collegiate goa made it 4-1 William Smith. She tipped a rebound past Fontaine’s pads. Fontaine made the initial stop on a Kiley Fewster shot but could not control the bouncing puck. Fewster and Tess Madarasz had the helpers on Madarasz’s goal.
Laurel Brown made her third consecutive start in the William Smith goal and made 39 saves as she notched her second straight win. Magee started in the Pioneers goal and made seven stops in one period of action. Fontaine played the final 40 minutes for Sacred Heart and stopped 15 shots.
The Herons were one of three on the power play while the Pioneers were kept off the board on their lone opportunity.
William Smith looks to extend its winning streak to three games tomorrow when they take on Sacred Heart at 2 p.m. at the Sports Center of Connecticut.
