REISTERSTOWN, Md.-The William Smith College ice hockey team defeated Stevenson 7-1 in the first United Collegiate Hockey Conference game for both teams. Six different players scored a goal for the Herons in the victory.
William Smith (3-0-0, 1-0-0) erupted for seven goals in the final 40 minutes after being outshot 12-7 in the first period. The Herons were led by senior Krista Federow’s three points (2g, 1a). Five different players recorded multi-point games for the Herons.
Senior Rebecca Begley opened the scoring 41 seconds into the second period with her third goal of the season. Federow was credited with an assist on the power-play goal. Three minutes later, Federow collected a rebound and wristed a shot past the Mustangs goalie. Junior Maura Mulligan was credited with an assist on the goal.
Chelsea Ellis appeared to turn the momentum in Stevenson’s (0-3-0, 0-1-0) favor when she scored a power-power play goal at 10:06 of the second period. She tucked a shot between Maggie Salmon’s left leg pad and the right post. Sarah Antonelli and Natalie Rosendahl were credited with assists on the goal.
William Smith quickly stifled the Mustang’s momentum when first-year Julia Mings scored ten seconds later. Fellow first-year, Lexi Nottke forced a turnover in the corner and threw the puck to the front of the net. Mings, who was crashing the net, tipped home her second goal of the season. Jules Kennedy extended the Herons’ lead to 4-1 with her third goal of the season. She collected a pass from sophomore Gina Scibetta in the slot and wristed the shot past Stevenson’s goalie.
William Smith tacked on three goals in the closing period. Nottke scored her first collegiate goal just over five minutes into the period. She was set up by Mings. Just under three minutes later, senior Kiley Fewster collected a rebound in the right faceoff circle and fired the loose puck across the goal line. Kennedy was credited with an assist on the goal. Federow added a power-play goal at 15:51 of the third period. Her team-leading fifth goal of the season was assisted by Begley and Mulligan.
Senior Maggie Salmon played all sixty minutes in goal for the Herons, stopping 35 of the 36 shots she faced. Caitie Darosa started in goal for Stevenson and made 16 saves in 40 minutes. Annie Smyth-Hammond stopped five shots in the third period.
The Mustangs finished with a 36-28 advantage in shots on goal. William Smith was 2-for-3 on the power play, while Stevenson was 1-for-7 with the extra attacker.
The two teams will be back in action tomorrow afternoon. Faceoff in Reisterstown, Md. is scheduled for 5:30 p.m.
