The William Smith College ice hockey team dropped the program’s first game this evening to the University of Massachusetts Boston 4-1. The Beacons spread their offensive chances around with four different skaters collecting goals.

On a night of firsts for the Herons (0-1-0), first-year Morgan Bayreuther<http://hwsathletics.com/roster.aspx?rp_id=5534> wrote her name in the history books scoring the first goal in William Smith varsity ice hockey history halfway through the third period. Krista Federow<http://hwsathletics.com/roster.aspx?rp_id=5542> dug a puck out of the corner and sent a shot in front of the goal. The puck deflected off of Bayreuther’s skate and beat the UMass goalie to make it 3-1 Beacons at the time.

UMass (1-0-0) got the first goal of the game at 9:58 of the first period. Emily Howard redirected a Kayla Smith shot from the point into the back of the net. As time ticked away in the first period, Kayla Kiernan extended the Beacons lead to 2-0. With UMass on a power play, Kat Armstrong found Kiernan alone in front of the crease for the goal.

In the second period, Alyssa Sullivan used a spectacular individual effort to beat Salmon and give the Beacons a 3-0 lead.  Sullivan collected a rebound and walked in all alone and buried a shot in the upper half of the net. Kristen Embrey added an empty net goal in the game’s final minute.

Maggie Salmon<http://hwsathletics.com/roster.aspx?rp_id=5549> played well in net for William Smith despite being under siege at times. She stopped 14 shots in the first period, 15 in the second and 14 in the third for a three period total of 43. Moe Bradley started between the pipes for UMass making five saves.

William Smith went 0-2 on the power play but killed off two of the three Beacon opportunities.
